It’s about time a great Indonesian coffee joined our single origin lineup. We’ve found a partner in Indonesia that’s doing awesome work in the community, and growing incredible coffee beans, and we’re proud to announce the latest addition to the Switch Espresso range: Sumatra Wahana-Sidikalang.
Wahana Estates has its own coffee plant nursery where experts cultivate a range of different Indonesian varieties. There is also a coffee farm and a factory for processing and washing beans ready for export. But the real winner here is the small lot farming programme.
Wahana distributes coffee seedlings to local smallhold farmers around Northern Sumatra and gives them training and support to run their own growing operations. The organisation then buys the ripe coffee cherries back off the farmers and processes them at the factory. We buy our beans directly from Wahana Estates (their New Zealand representative works closely with the Switch Roastery). Our single origin beans come from the Sidikalang farm, and they’re exclusive to Switch Espresso.
As part of the programme, farmers, Wahana Estates staff and their families get access to free education, healthcare, clean water and housing. The organisation works to protect the native wildlife of Sumatra, and improve soil quality through maintaining a shade canopy and managing farms, establishing a conservation area, and running an ecological pest and disease control system. Wahana is committed to traceability, transparency, sustainable farming, and high-quality speciality coffee beans.
Speaking of the beans, we’ve roasted up the first delivery and it is spectacular. Sumatran coffee is generally lower in acidity than other coffees and has a full-bodied flavour. This single origin roast has a fruity acidity and notes of berries followed up by a long cocoa aftertaste.
