Another year down, and it’s safe to say it was a real ride. Honestly though, we’re absolutely stoked, grateful and humbled by how 2020 went for our community. Things could have gotten real ugly, but New Zealanders and Christchurchians pulled together to fend off Covid and to support each other through the recovery.
We don’t want to downplay the terrible year many people in our Christchurch community have had, but we do want to say thank you to everyone who supported Switch and our partner cafés last year – it’s meant the world to us and the small businesses who work with us.
Many of the cafés we supply coffee beans to are family businesses, teeny-weeny operations, and even one-person bands. So cheers to you coffee drinkers, cabinet food eaters and sit-down diners – and cheers to the baristas who kept us fuelled with excellent coffee.
Highlight of 2020
That first post-lockdown espresso. How good to get out of the house and tentatively venture back into the wild for a proper, barista-made coffee?
Looking forward in 2021
Our big focus this year is supporting local Aotearoa and Ōtautahi people and businesses. As well as working closely with our partner cafés, we’ll continue to hold fundraiser events with the NZ Specialty Coffee Association, and promote local initiatives from good locals like SammyBags (reusable, washable paper coffee bags) and Monstera & Men (composting coffee cups to grow plants).
We’ll also be doing all our core stuff, and we’d love you to drop by the roastery and see what’s going on. We’ll be running barista training courses – both for pro baristas and home enthusiasts – and cupping sessions to help you get to know the flavour profiles of different coffees. And every day you can visit us at the roastery and the attached Industrie Espresso Bar, or drop by our cafés Black Betty and Bunsen for a great feed with your Switch Espresso.
